Today’s Drone Maven Monday features a Q&A with Alison Miller, aka Atlanta Drone Girl.

What made you get into the drone industry?

It’s funny, the way it started flying drones. My best friend Kevin and I would always go to Best Buy to look at drones. Best Buy only had two left one Friday, so we both bought drones that day. It was the DJI spark. That is how it all started, sharing a hobby with a friend. COVID has made me focus on my aerial skills because for me it was the safest way to go outside and have fun while social distancing.

How do you use your drone – recreationally or commercially?

I fly both recreational and commercially. I actually flew three of my drones in an upcoming movie featuring Jasmine Guy.

What piece of advice would you give to youth interested in the drone industry?

Anyone interested in this industry, make sure you set realistic goals and stick to them. Figure out what you are good at first and then stick to it. Don’t judge your work based off of anyone else’s, you are unique in your own way. Last, never stop learning and perfecting your craft. This is a man driven field but as women, we make our own paths. There will be doors that close in your face, keep knocking.

At Black Girl Drone World, we use the power of our collective voice to recruit new mentors to encourage girls of color to join the drone industry. Are you a drone maven? Sign-up to volunteer as a Black Girl Drone World Mentor today.
