Bessie Coleman (January 26, 1892 – April 30, 1926)[2] was an early American civil aviator. She was the first African-American woman and first Native American to hold a pilot license. She was also the first Black person to earn an international pilot's license.

Today’s Drone Maven Monday features a Q&A with A Today’s Drone Maven Monday features a Q&A with Ashlee Cooper, founder of Droneversity.

What made you get into the drone industry?

In Dec 2020, I was standing on a chair to take a picture of a 10 x 10 ft balloon art design I created, and was told that I needed a drone. I later got that person's email and participated in her company's Part 107 course. Getting to learn about opportunities in the drone industry for those starting as young as 16 years old even without a H.S. diploma made me want to tell everyone and their mom about the billion-dollar drone industry. I'm still working on telling everyone, and continue to forge a way for myself and others in the drone industry.

How do you use your drone - recreationally or commercially?

Both! I keep a DJI mini II in my purse. Plus, family and friends are always asking me to take a picture of their roofs (for free).😄

Through my company Droneversity, I develop and teach drone-related curriculum for youth and teach Part 107 prep. I also inspect cell towers, and performed aerial photography and videography of residential and commercial real estate.

What piece of advice would you give to youth interested in the drone industry?

Consider your skill sets and passions first, then consider how you can use what you know about drones to profit in an area you are already passionate about. I've been an educator for years, where I mostly used a microscope to expose people to STEM opportunities. Now I use a drone to educate people on drone safety and career opportunities within the drone industry. I love what I'm doing and the opportunities have followed.

This Black History Month, Black Girl Drone World c This Black History Month, Black Girl Drone World celebrates “The Firsts” and the work of Willa Beatrice Brown.

Behind many firsts is an incredible story. Common themes include: a huge amount of work, lots of attempts and failures, and overcoming significant obstacles. Firsts can be giant accomplishments, prompt huge disruption, trigger backlash, or all three.

Yet, they play a really important role. They prove something is doable and create the path for the seconds, thirds, and so on.

As we work to grow our numbers in the sUAS (drone) industry, let’s remember those who created the path for black women in the aviation industry.
